Necropolitics and COVID-19 5/8/2020 5:19:51 AM
How coronavirus (COVID-19) is compromising people of color and poorer Caucasians in America. On Saturday, May 2, 2020, listening to one of my favorite news programs on MSNBC, “AM Joy,”
Professor Brittany Cooper was discussing “necropolitics.” Having worked in healthcare for a number of years, I knew prefix “necro” meant death, and politics is self-explanatory.
As we've all heard by now, COVID-19 infections and deaths are rampant in communities of color, and communities of poorer Caucasians. Even though some people went for testing multiple times, they were turned away, and some eventually died. In many instances, this included our first responders – no personal protective equipment available in hospitals, nursing homes, prisons, meat packing plants, etc. President Trump used his “Defense Production Act” for meat packing plants where COVID-19 is prevalent among employees (people of color, immigrants and poorer Caucasians to keep food supply going) yet, has not used it for testing.
President Trump has shown disdain for people of color. They are expendable, not valuable. This is disgusting because a great number of our healthcare providers are immigrants and people of color.
President Trump has roused his followers to demand states reopen, even though numbers of infections and deaths continue to increase. It has been reported that the federal government has ordered 100,000 body bags. Businesses are requesting immunity from liability should they reopen and employees contract COVID-19.
My suggestion to all, continue to social distance, and definitely wear masks. We need testing, tracing, and quarantine as warranted so that we can really reopen every state, safely.
