Racial relations in America. Mr. George Floyd's killing in Minneapolis, Minnesota dredged up an incidence of bullying and brutality from my childhood in Meriden, Connecticut. It happened in my 7th grade Science with Mr. S's class at Jefferson Middle School. A Caucasian male student named Robert sat in front of me, turned around, and stabbed my left wrist with a #2 yellow pencil.
My Mom had to come get me from school and take me to our doctor to remove the broken lead from my arm to make sure it wasn’t infected. I had to get a tetanus shot.
I had no idea what set this boy off, but fortunately he was no longer in my class when I returned to school the next day.
Years ago, when I worked for a community mental health center, I remember one of our psychologists stating “persons with a law enforcement background have a propensity for violence.” This person also worked with a local police department to address behavioral issues and officers’ fitness for duty.
In the performance of their law enforcement duties, as an African-American female, I've experienced, seen, and read about the continued death, brutality, harassment and other forms of cruelty to people of color, in particular – black males and females.
I continually see the African-American bikinied female teenager at a pool party in Texas who was picked up by a police officer and/or sheriff and dropped on the ground. Recently, we saw another officer repeatedly hitting an African-American female in either her head or upper body.
Why is it always open season to brutalize, harass, maim and/or kill African-Americans? – (Rodney King, Eric Garner, Michael Brown and George Floyd to name a few.)
I frequently ask myself when is this “white privilege/male privilege” going to end? Then I remember, law enforcement is made up of many races and both genders. Is it the training in their classes, manuals, videos or software programs? What is It? Is a merit badge given for attacking African-American males or females? Why is there so much hatred and animosity towards my race?
Even though we are being murdered, brutalized and/or abused, it hurts very much to know that African-Americans continue to pay your salary as a taxpayer. It hurts because a great number of my family members were/are military persons who defended/defends this Country now, and are still discriminated against.
It hurts because some of these people profess to be Christians. They take the Holy Sacrament and still hurt his brother or sister of color.
This bigotry and racist train must stop now. Truthful and factual education about blacks and other persons of color in America is imperative and pertinent for all of us to grow as a Nation.
