Discrimination in the World of Bird Watching

Bird watching can be simple, fun and easy or it can be expensive and elitist.
We decided to take the plunge and do the required 20 visits to our favorite bird watching habitat. Sometimes getting to the park for 20 visits was challenging--what with doctor appointments, important meetings, invitations to weddings and funerals, trips to the grocery and stormy weather. But over the course of a month (April) we managed to squeeze in actually 21 visits. One extra just in case. The prize? A free pair of Zeiss binoculars. It kept us going, working hard to squeeze in those visits. We imagined the expensive beautiful stream-lined bins in our hands. How lovely the birds would look. Then the email finally came to announce the winners. What? We didn't qualify. We didn't have GPS and high pixel photos. To win, you had to already have expensive equipment. We felt sad. The requirement of advanced tech was a type of discrimination. A discrimination against birders who did not have the money to play the big game. Bitterness set in. Those who have get! We'll never try that again. But we won't give up on our enjoyment of nature and bird watching! So there!
