"Review Packages"

I was watching a few Mel Brooks films last week, including the original version of The Producers. (Still way too funny, by the way!). In this version, along with doing everything possible to ensure a "flop," Zero Mostel's character (Max Bialystock) passes money to one of the critics taking in the show on opening night. It's clearly a bribe...Max knows the critic will be iso incensed and insulted, he'll slam the show in retaliation.
Fast forward to emails I keep receiving from a variety of "clubs" who provide book reviews. For a price. Often a steep price.
Which seems to me just...wrong Unless an author has a contract, he or she is writing the book on their own time, hoping for a publisher will scoop up their brilliant novel.
Often, especially with small press, even with a contract there's no advance.
So the author is writing a book without guarantee of compensation.....yet is expected to not only provide the finished product for free but PAY some reviewer (with who-knows-what qualifications) to provide an opinion.
Show me the plumber who comes out to my house and not only fixes the pipe break for free but gives me $150 to review their work on Angie's List.
Or the orthodontist who slaps on a pair of braces for free...then gives the parents of her teenage client another $500 to praise her work on google reviews.
The majority of those of us who write do so because we love telling a story and perhaps even getting a message out to readers. We do not have thousands of dollars to spend on review packages. (We need to pay the plumber or the dentist.)
In "olden" days, less than 20 years ago, publishers automatically sent the book to a variety of reviewers, most of them at news outlets (I really miss RT Book Reviews!) As far as I know, publishers weren't also sending hundreds (or thousands) of dollars along with an ARC (advanced reading copy).
Maybe it's just me...but the word bribery does keep pounding in my head. And, in a world that has been progressively placing greed over decency and fairness, this seems another step too far into plain corruption.
