ALLEGED.
I posted a short version of these thoughts on a friend’s Facebook thread but decided I needed to “expand” a bit. I keep seeing a lot of posts (again, on FB) about the alleged suspect in Charlie Kirk’s murder. He may be the killer. I don’t know. NEITHER DOES ANYONE ELSE. And that is the point.
Currently in America, there is a presumption of innocence for accused persons.
“Innocent until proven guilty.” Even if a suspect confesses, they are not legally considered guilty until either a trial is held or the suspect goes before the court and a verdict of guilty goes into the record.
We’re already seeing the horrific results of ignoring warrantless searches and due process. And let’s face it…we all hear about a confession or we see someone in handcuffs and we assume…’guilty.” It’s human nature, especially in the face of a terrible crime. We’re relieved because someone was caught. We feel safer. We feel justified in our belief over the person’s identity.
It’s human nature. It's also not one of our best traits. Which could be why the very wise framers put it into the Constitution. And ignoring the presumption of innocence can lead to serious consequences, such as vigilantism running rampant for all of us living in America. Labeling a person a criminal already has led to violence for far too many, for far too many years.
If you’re posting about this man, just take the two extra seconds and add the word “alleged”. Don’t do it just for him.
Do it for all of us.
