Why the Hate?

At some point, hopefully, the U.S. will get back to electing leaders who are competent. At some point, those leaders will start upholding basic rights in the Constitution. Ideas of decency and fairness and kindness might again be seen as values instead of concepts to scorn and deride. But what worries me is how this country manages to overcome the outpouring of actual hatred we’ve been witnessing from elected and appointed officials, from television pundits masquerading as journalists, from media personalities whose claim to fame seems to be amassing obscene wealth or leading organizations whose goal appears to be the destruction of anyone who doesn’t fit in with their beliefs.
Millionaire Fox personality (I refuse to say “news host”) Brian Kilmeade remarked…on air…that mentally ill homeless people should be put to death by involuntary lethal injection. How in creation can a man reveal such a foul attitude toward his fellow human beings who struggle to find a clean place to sleep, then head back to his 4 bedroom house (with the pool )on Long Island and feel justified in his comments?
We all saw the photos of couples who could have come right out of an episode of Leave it to Beaver laughing and pointing to signs for Alligator Alcatraz. The comments and photos and videos expressing hate for our fellow human beings is a common occurrence on the news and on social media. Charlie Kirk was elevated to the status of sainthood for his views that were openly racist and homophobic. Daily, on social media, we see videos of Ice agents perpetrating violence against unarmed immigrants.
And I have to ask…why? Where is this venomous language and disgust for others coming from? How did so many people get to this point of sheer hatred?
If anyone has a right to call for violence it’s the people who have been under attack by this administration since day one. The immigrants trying to provide for their families. The trans kids (and adults) praying to make it through a day without listening to the ignorant, disgusting vitriol spewing out of the mouths of people who doubtless never even met anyone who identifies as trans. The black women who are vilified for running for office (and winning) or piloting planes or heading up successful corporations or….(serious DEI infraction here) marrying a black man who had the temerity to be president for two terms and…(how DARE he!) be awarded the Nobel Peace prize. (Still scratching my head over whose "slot" Michelle stole as First Lady.)
Surprisingly, the majority of people who’ve been wronged aren’t taking to the streets or social media screaming for the death or imprisonment into hellholes. The people pointing out the hypocrisy of Charlie Kirk’s assassination by gunfire with his views on collateral damage in gun deaths weren’t applauding his death…they expressed honest sympathy for his family and friends. The victims of Epstein and Maxwell’s horrific abuse are asking for simple justice; not the heads on a platter of the client list.
Which brings me back WHY? Why is all this hate and anger coming…not from the oppressed…but the oppressors?
Which leaves me wondering …when this administration finally leaves…when America tries to find some sanity and decency and goodness…can we ever get past this overabundance of hate?
