Fake Promoters Upping the Game

Watch for the latest scam. Pretending to be another author.
Warning to Fellow authors: The greedy promoters are getting sneaky. I received an email yesterday regarding Remake the Song (and how wonderful it is, which of course, I agree with!) and wanting to 'connect' to discuss my process in writing.
What was unusual was this one didn't include the typical"I have a book club with 3,000 members and we would love to review and turn your novel into a best seller" B.S.
It DID include all the phrases about the story that can be found in the blurb and the sample chapters.
But here's the really sneaky "tick me off no end" part. This promoter used the name of an actual author and her website pretending to be her. Yep. I'm supposed to believe this was just one writer to another wantin' to kick back and chat fer a spell. Really??
So i went to this author's website and found a great contact form, then wrote to let her know her name was being taken in vain. She's going to try and stop it but honestly? There's not much anyone can do.
Which is why I'm sending out this warning because what looks like a genuine letter from a reader or even a fellow author may be nothing more than a way to reel you in before they hit you with "And we ONLY charge tips of $25 for each review!"
If there's a website, don't click on it...look it up.
And get to know the language in these "Promoter" emails. You can usually spot the difference between a reader, a fellow writer, or a fake promoter within the first line...or even the subject header.
Why can't people just be honest?
