Illegal Orders

Scene: Queens, New York…a small house at the end of a block
A SWAT team sits quietly in a van across the street.
Officer Smith: “So, low long before the warrant arrives?”
Captain Bradley: “We don’t need a warrant?”
Smith: What? Are we just yelling through a megaphone 'You’re under arrest' and grabbing them when they come out?"
Bradley: "No. Look, It’s time. Get the rocket launcher and aim it directly at the front door.
Smith: “But, sir, that’s illegal. We can 't just blow up a house with people inside!”
Bradley: “Shut the f!!! up! We’ve got orders directly from the Commissioner of Police. He claims members of the 18th Street gang are inside, setting up a meth lab. Now set that thing off or I’ll have you brought up on charges of refusing a direct order from a superior.”
Smith does as ordered.
The house bursts into flames. Screams fill the night.
Then, miraculously, two young men escape through an open window, fall into the yard and crawl to safety, collapsing by the unused fire hydrant as they cry out for help.
Bradley turns to Officer Doe, the SWAT team’s best sniper. “Take ‘em out.”
Doe protests. “Sir, they’re unarmed. They’re not resisting. They’re badly injured.”
Bradley responds, “I don’t give a damn. Our orders are to kill everybody. Do it.”
Doe lifts a rifle and sends a barrage of bullets into the bodies of the two men. For a brief moment Doe hears the cries of pain.
Silence.
The SWAT team watches for a moment as the house continues to burn. They start up the van and drive away.
Captain Bradley calls Commissioner Brian, who congratulates him on a job well done before proceeding to down a fifth of whiskey while sending a text message to the leader of MS 13 telling him the job is done and he wants his cut.
