Hope for 2026

As a writer of time travels I do my best to get a feel for what was actually happening at a certain point in history. My books tend to “stay” within the 20th and 21st century (although I’ve got plot ideas that could send a heroine back to the 1890s) so it’s a bit easier than sifting through medieval history! But, point being, seeing past eras I literally feel sick when I realize that Trump’s reign of terror could have happened , say, the same time Hitler and Stalin rose to power. Millions of groups who’ve fighting for centuries for basic human rights would have been hard-pressed to survive these totalitarian, oppressive, cruel, corrupt governments coming to power simultaneoulsy.
While scrolling through FB last night, it occurred to me that there’s a glimmer of hope for the future, oddly thanks to living in a media-saturated era. Which is a mixed blessing.
The bad news is that bad news is plastered on the Internet 24/7 and we watch horrible things happening in real time, making us feel helpless. We see the face of a man clearly suffering from some form of dementia, clearly incapable of leadership of any kind, and so filled with hatred he has no ability to process what it’s like to experience any real joy.
But the good news is we live at a time when we can watch thousands of people stand outside to greet and cheer on a small band of monks walking for peace (along with their awesome canine companion, Aloka!) We’ve witnessed more than a million people stand up during No Kings days and say “No. Not happening here.”
We’ve been able to watch as neighborhoods come together to rally at motels where ICE agents are staying and keep the thugs from kidnapping families or tearing children from the arms of their parents. We can read the words of musicians who are refusing to bow to the illegal rebranding of the Kennedy Center as they cancel performances. We can watch politicians such as Zohran Mamdani tell MAGA where to stick it as he appoints qualified people to offices regardless of ethnicity, faith, or being part of the LGBTQ+ community.
We can watch indigenous tribes proudly celebrating traditions dating back centuries, letting us share in the events through online reels. We can share greetings for both religious and cultural holidays with love and respect for all.
And, while mainstream media, too many cowardly politicians, and business owners continue to ignore (or even embrace) the very real danger posed by Trump’s administration, other journalists and late-night show hosts come right out and tell us the truth, often through satire and humor.
So…looking ahead to 2026, I’m resolved to focus on the good (while continuing to call out the bad) in hopes there are enough of us to truly make a difference.
Now I’m grabbing some coffee and heading over to Aloka’s page to see what the pooch is up to!
