Frightened for the Children

My workouts alternate between cardio/Pilates days and what I call The Full Monty (in clothes for those of you who know the movie!) days, which consist of strength training, yoga, and ballet. I hate strength training. Hate it. Consequently, when I do The Full Monty I need good music to keep me inspired. This past week I pulled out my old Moody Blues five CD set. Four from their albums and a bonus.
In between planks and wall squats I began focusing on the lyrics from "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock n' Roll Band."
“And when you see a frightened person who is frightened by the people
Who are scorching this earth.
Scorching this earth.”
Then came "The Story in Your Eyes". And the lines:
“I am frightened for your children,
That the life that we are living in is vain,
And the sunshine we’ve been waiting for will turn to rain.”
The CD set is called Time Traveler. The songs were written in the late Sixties and early Seventies and I had to wonder if Justin Hayward and John Lodge managed to take a trip to the future and came back with tunes to warn us. Because we ARE frightened. What’s happening in America may not yet have affected each of us personally (apart from rising prices) but as rights are stripped and we watch communities terrorized and families torn apart…if we're NOT affected then we're as sick as those destroying America.
Which leads back to being “frightened for your children”.
We’re failing so miserably when it comes to protecting the most vulnerable among us. We’re seeing SNAP benefits ripped away. Something as cheap and yet as necessary as school lunches…gone in many places. With research defunded, hospitals closing, and people with no medical training (or credibility) banishing vaccines, children are already paying the price with their lives.
Education is a joke. Not just public. Private schools are also subject to the stupidity of teaching to ‘tests’. History textbooks have been revised to favor nothing less than the “greatness of white supremacy” in some states.
We have a Congress and a Supreme Court who are protecting pedophiles. The administration is ready and eager to go to war partly as a distraction from the truth we already know.
War. Let's switch to different musician from the Sixties, Phil Ochs, and this line from "I Ain't Marching Anymore."
"It's always the old who lead us into war; it's always the young who fall." Children killing other children.
Speaking of children killing…how valiantly we favor children over guns.
Oops! Sorry...It's the total reverse. Thanks to the NRA, whose lobbying efforts in Congress spend millions yearly, we’ve ensured that guns are readily available. Yeah, those “thoughts and prayers” just really helped put a stop to all the school shootings, haven't they?
ICE is ripping children from their parents. Tear-gassing schools.
“Sunshine will turn to rain.”
We're handing down a ruined planet to the children.
Climate change is already here. We see storms getting worse every year. Communities are watching AI data centers ruin their water supplies. We’re losing entire species of wildlife on an almost daily basis.
I am frightened for the children.
From my favorite Moody Blues song, "Nights in White Satin":
“Just what you want to be…you will be in the end.”
It's long past time to decide...What DO we want to be?
