A nation of sociopaths

Sleep proved elusive last night. I kept seeing the reel I posted on Facebook of Ms. Aliyah Rahman testifying before Congress and I just wasn’t able to let it go. Because it reminded me again that what we’re seeing in the news on a daily, an hourly, basis, is a consistent lack of empathy and disregard for laws, not only by ICE agents but by all three branches of government.
And my question is: How have we managed to elect as our “representatives” such a large number of people who are displaying sociopathic or psychopathic tendencies? People who are allowing this country to dissolve into an authoritarian state? People who turn their backs on the pain and anguish of others? People who are protecting the worst of the worst?
Sociopath: An antisocial personality disorder which manifests itself through a disregard for rules, lack of empathy and violation of others’ rights, callousness and lack of remorse, chronic manipulation, and a tendency toward physical violence and crime.
Psychopath: Similiar to sociopaths in disregarding rules, lack of empathy, and tendencies toward violence but “scarier” in that they lack any genuine emotional response to others, are more calculated and manipulative, plan their actions (as opposed to acting on impulse) and are often very charming and/or charismatic.
From everything I’ve read, both sociopaths and psychopaths are “made” not born, which I suppose is good news because what can be made can be unmade, not to mention if a person is born psychopathic, it brings up some very nasty theological questions for anyone who believes in the concept of a Creator making folks in His or Her own image or endowing humans with free will.
We have a sitting president who, in my opinion, is a psychopath. All the signs are there, including the whole “often exhibiting personality traits of charm and charisma". I’ve never seen it, but rumor has it that Trump (at least before the dementia became evident) was a man with a lot of charm and charisma. He HAD to have some weird kind of charisma to convince 77 million people to vote for him. Either 77 million people can also be classified as sociopaths and psychopaths, or they were duped by a con artist oozing charisma along with his snake oil. Consider this: If Trump's puppet-master, the less-than-charming Steven Miller (who has as much charisma as a slug crawling through dirt in a garden) had been the candidate, the entire country would have voted blue. Trump is the the snake-oil salesman, but Miller is the snake.
So here we are, watching American democracy turn to dust, half of us terrified, angry, disgusted and saddened because we also feel helpless as our fellow human beings are illegally grabbed off the streets, imprisoned, tortured, and killed… and there is no accountability. More than 100 lives were lost in Venezuala when the psychopath-in-chief ordered a city bombed…and there is no accountability. Epstein’s merry band of billionaire buddies molested, trafficked, and raped children….and there is no accountability. Environmental protections are gutted…and there is no accountability.
And I ask again…how did we end up with so many elected leaders who are unwilling to do the right thing? Who display zero empathy toward the people they claim to represent? Who ignore the law like it's the aforementioned slug in the garden?
When did we become a nation of sociopaths?
