What Do You Want?

I keep coming back to the basics of Acting and Fiction Writing. Asking a character “What do you want?” Normally, there’s an answer, whether it's provided by a playwright or the author. But in today’s United States, the question echoes and no one in MAGA-Land seems to be able to respond.
Basically, humans are selfish. And that’s generally a good thing because it ensures survival. We want food and shelter and relief from extremes of cold or heat. We want companionship. We want to be free from pain and illness. We want to have enough funds to be able to get the food and the shelter. We want our loved ones safe from harm.
Which is why I honestly don’t get it.
There have been many posts the past two weeks showing reels or photos of the faces of dead Iranian children, murdered by Trump and his crew. (And whether those bombs ultimately came from American-propelled missiles or Iranian doesn't matter a damn. If Trump hadn't started a war, those babies would be in class today.). There have been posts of other children, now adults, who were trafficked and raped by Trump and the Epstein crowd for decades.
Today I saw a post of the black skies burning oil over the people in Iran. For the xenophobic MAGAs, who apparently aren't bothered by harm coming to anyone apart from white citizens of the United States, there are dozens of reports and pleas for help coming from Americans trapped in a country thousands of miles from home...with no exit plan.
And I’m asking MAGA…or anyone who voted for this incredibly corrupt, evil machine hell-bent on taking us into World War Three…WHAT DO YOU WANT?
Trump is in office, in part because he spun a web of lies about helping folks obtain those basics I listed in my first paragraph.
Yet, food prices continue to rise, as do mortgages and rents and utilities. He promised some kind of healthcare yet millions are overpaying and millions are without. Hospitals and research centers have closed. Childhood diseases that have been eradicated (or at least controlled) for decades are back with a vengeance. Trump promised a stimulus package…relief for funds he kept maintaining people were owed thanks to Biden’s “lack of leadership”. That ain’t happenin’. (Shocker, huh?)
We have a man clearly suffering from dementia, controlled and protected by a group of inept, greedy, non-law-abiding people no one elected...and yet we have a Congress that continues to let them get away with everything.
We have a planet in crisis; not only thanks to the inhuman practice of war, but from an environment that is tired of sustaining life and being bashed in return.
There are children dying. In Iran. In Gaza. In the Ukraine. In Africa. In America.
Trump supporters….in all sincerity.....WHAT DO YOU WANT? If you can’t provide an answer, maybe it’s time you do a bit of soul searching.
And while you’re thinking of your own needs, you might do well to consider that all those basics I mentioned are shared by every other human on this earth.
WHAT DO YOU WANT?
