Land of Confusion

I mentioned the other day I’d been listening to a lot of 80s music for dancing. Was playing an ancient tape (yeah, cassette…I used it to “go across the floor” in class and it still works!). Where was I? Oh yeah. A mix of Eighties music. And while I was stretching and kicking and twisting my back into a pretzel I was listening because I’d managed to choose songs that had something to do with the horrors going on in the world. (Except for the fabulous, Street of Dreams by Rainbow that had an obscure meaning and an even more puzzling video!)
Today’s kicker was Phil Collin’s “Land of Confusion.” Release date 1986 under the “sainted” Ronald Reagan who managed, with great charisma, to destroy the American economy with his “Trickle-down” philosophy that did nothing but make the rich richer, provide us with the Iran-Contra scandal and started the GOP tradition of ruling behind a person with dementia…and getting away with it. It’s surprising how much Ronnie and Donnie share in terms of destroying the country. At least Ronnie wasn’t a pedophile. One good point there.
Interesting that Disturbed did a cover of Land of Confusion in 2005, in the middle of the war with Iraq. Another American debacle that ruined millions of lives.
Collins starts with the line
“I must have dreamed a thousand dreams
Been haunted my a million screams
But I can hear the marching feet
They’re moving into the street.”
His words are chilling and they evoke all the devastating images we see and read about daily in Trumpland. The nightmare is here.
Near the end of the song, Phil gives us the chilling line, “Our generation will put it right…we’re not just making promises that we know we’ll never keep.”
Ouch That’s MY generation he’s talking about. He’s not talking about the babies born in 1986. Collins is now 75. He’s talking about the Boomers. The same generation that spawned Donald Trump and Linda McMahon, Chief “Justice” (using the term loosely) John Roberts and fellow corrupt judges Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito. That produced Lindsey Graham and, lest we forget, the man who denied Barack Obama the chance to put anyone on the Supreme Court, Mitch McConnell. The generation that produced Jeffrey Epstein. And Franklin Graham.
This is the generation that fought an unjust war in the late Sixties and early Seventies. That pushed for Civil Rights. That helped force out a corrupt president (with, as is NOT happening today, the aid of his political party.)
The generation that promoted peace and love and harmony.
Collins asks, “Superman, where are you now?”
Our generation lost him. We failed to promote truth and justice and instead hyped a demented, corrupt, immoral con artist bent on keeping this a confused land and calling it The American Way.
We need to “put it right.”
