The Founding Fathers...Good and Bad

Our Founding Fathers were amazingly savvy and smart. They came up with a set of rules and guidelines that included freedoms of speech, assembly and religion; doing away with warrantless searches and seizures; guarantees to a public trial by jury and the right to have a lawyer; and protection from cruel and unusual punishment. Includes a bill noting that people have numerous basic rights that are not specifically listed in the Constitution. Possibly the coolest move made was to create the concept of checks and balances. They figured this would keep America safe from any one branch of government taking over and ultimately destroying the entire nation.
Unfortunately, the same founders implemented one of the worst flaws this nation has dealt with for the last 250 years. Too many put power and property over principle. The first example was the slavery clause shoved into the Declaration of Independence. These men weren’t stupid. They were aware that slavery was evil and wrong, but ignored principle in favor of property. Half of the Continental Congress blackmailed (or extorted) the other half in a move that sowed the seeds of destruction for the next two centuries…a practice that continues to this day. The nation has seen slavery, the Civil War, Jim Crow “laws”, riots over Civil Rights and today’s horror show of blatant bigotry by people in power along with “ordinary” citizens.
The founders also weren’t gifted with foresight. They never imagined that sycophants in Congress and the Supreme Court would so favor power and property over principle that they would willfully hand over the country to a felon who practices murder and bribery in plain view. A demented loser who never had principles to begin with. They couldn’t see the erosion of so many of those rights, including the freedoms and the warrantless searches and lack of trials that lead to cruel punishment and, all too often, to death.
There are no checks and balances anymore. It remains to be seen if this can change with November’s election but since SCOTUS and the clown in the White House are determined to destroy voting rights much in the same way the conman has brought about the ruin of the People’s House.
I don’t know how to change the minds of those who ignore principle in favor of power or property in the lives of “leaders” or individually. The threat of an Afterlife where power and property don’t exist doesn’t seem to matter. Once a cult operates on the scale of MAGA…it’s hard to stop the flood.
My options are to continue to write about what I see happening for the worse in America…and to vote to change it.
