A Second Remembrance

As I read through some of the posts about 9/11, I couldn’t help but be struck at the hypocrisy of our country. Why do I say this? After all, Americans are (rightly) able to push aside politics for a day to mourn the dead and praise the heroes. We manage to unite behind our outrage and our sadness.
And yet, there IS hypocrisy. Because we seem determined to forget another unbelievable tragedy. Another surprise attack that took the lives of more than 168 people. At least 120 of the dead were children. The attack took place at a school in Minab, Iran on February 28, 2026. There have been no ceremonies or cries of anger and grief…at least not in the United States.
Is it because the number didn’t come close to the 3000 lives we lost in America? Is it because the attack took place so many thousands of miles from America? Is it because we didn’t watch, stunned and afraid, in real time on our TV sets or stay in constant contact with a loved one in New York or Washington or Shanksville, Pennsylvania?
God forbid, is it because these were Muslims and therefore “unworthy” of the grief and attention that has captured the nation for 25 years since 9/11?
Is it because Americans are afraid to acknowledge what most organizations (like Amnesty International) claim…that U.S. forces were responsible for these unconscionable deaths?
Is it because drone attacks by this (and other) administrations in the Middle East and Afghanistan have become so common we refuse to acknowledge our responsibility for these deaths? When we allow elected officials and certain members of the military to play their war games and children are destroyed, that blame and shame should extend to the entire country shrugging their shoulders at these atrocities.
The 9/11 hijackers supposedly murdered for a cause. Which is exactly what Trump’s America claimed when it carried out the slaughter of the school children in Minab, Iran. This so-called cause is nothing less than money, power, control, and ego.
Do we ignore the deaths of the children because Americans are so terrified of the cult leader in charge that we hope by ignoring the loss of 168 souls, we can sweep this obscene tragedy into the shadows? I’ve honestly seen more outrage over the destruction of the Rose Garden and the Reflecting Pool than over the agony this administration deliberately inflicted on human beings. Don't get me wrong,, like the majority of Americans, I’m thoroughly ticked and disgusted about the vandalized monuments and memorials, but a garden can be regrown and damage to a basin can be repaired.
When an eight-year-old carrying a backpack is murdered by a Tomahawk missile, there’s no do-over for the child or the family. I admit it. My heart breaks when I think about the doors of homes that will never be opened by a child eager to share the newest book given that day in class. They are gone. Forever.
The destruction of the towers (and the Pentagon and United Airlines Flight 93) were acts of pure evil and should never be forgotten. I will always mourn the victims of 9/11. I have so much admiration for the first responders who saved so many and for the “civilians” who risked (and too often lost) their lives, somehow finding ways to get friends, colleagues, and strangers out of harm's way. The incredible heroism displayed that awful day was nothing less than phenomenal.
But there is no way to atone for another act of pure evil horrifically planned and instigated by the current leaders of the United States. Sadly, it seems the majority of America HAS forgotten, and too many actually still sanction the bombing.
I believe there is room for more than one memorial. It’s okay and it’s right and it takes nothing away from our remembrance of 9/11 when we think about the children who also died on a clear and sunny day...all of whom were as innocent and unsuspecting and as loved by their families and friends as the victims of September 11th.
Perhaps on February 28th, 2027, we could all take a moment and remember the souls who lost their lives. They deserve nothing less.
