I really love the US - I still visit on occasional business and have always loved the open and warm and diverse cultures - in a world grown cold in so many ways the US still seemed to offer hope.
I hope the US rises again as a beacon of hope and youthful vision.

Great blog write on a valid and important topic, Keith. I was against the war at first. There are still aspects I disagree with; the amount of money spent and the length of the war. I read Khaled Hosseini's "A Thousand Splendid Suns" and it really helped me to understand why someone's help was needed over there. It also helped me to understand that our presence, though morally questionable, is appreciated by many.

You are right. Bush tends to police the whole world instead of recycling funds in his own country. He uses our tax dollars to fund the issues he backs instead of concentrating on the needs of Americans. Charity is admirable and shows compassion, but is there an end in sight? A country needs to sustain itself if it's going to survive. The USA has debts of its own, crime of its own, and poverty of its own. At least some funds from Idol Gives Back went to Katrina survivors, because there are still so many from that event who are homeless. I had to laugh when the last episode of Idol aired with a clip of Bush & his wife thanking those who gave. The mood was definitely a thanks-for-giving-because-we-are-spending-your-tax-dollars-on-the-issues-we-feel-are-important. It's a shame because it's a fact that many Americans are struggling with mortgages, bills, and healthcare. Thanks for sharing, Keith!

It can be truly horrifying when you remember we are supposed to be the "shining city on the hill."

It can be outright sickening when you remember that not only are there "Idol" fund raisers, but also plenty of fund raisers for soldiers and their families. 12 billion where? Good grief.

Good point, Keith... Americans, for the most part, are good, generous people. The 12 billion being drained by this immoral, illegal "Bush" war is detested by a great majority of "us."
