Dr. Kathryn Waddell Takara will visit Maui, Hawaii to kick off her book tour.
Dr. Kathryn Waddell Takara will visit Maui to read from and sign her new book, “Pacific Raven: Hawai`i Poems,” with introduction by Maui award-winning poet Ayin Adams.
Events are set for July 16 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Borders Books & Music-Maui in Kahului, July 17 at 7 p.m. at Temple of Peace in Haiku and July 18 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. at Barnes & Noble in Lahaina.
Takara, born and raised in Tuskegee, Alabama, recently retired as an associate professor from the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s Interdisciplinary Studies Program.
She also taught in the Ethnic Studies Department, where she developed courses in African American and African
politics, history, literature and culture beginning in 1971.
Her poetry has been published in a variety of publications.
Takara is the daughter of pioneer black veterinarian, author and world-famous Buffalo Soldier Dr. William H. Waddell IV, VMD (1908-2007).
