 King of the Mountain by P.J. Dunn introduces readers to the Battle of Kings Mountain on October 7, 1780 in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. The novel also introduces readers to the actual account of Major Patrick Ferguson who commanded the British Loyalist army.
 
During the beginning of the Revolutionary War, the Northern States commonly dominated scenes of battle. British commanders soon realized control over the south was imperative to provide victory and claim the American Colonies as their own. P.J. Dunn provides readers with an exciting, adventurous, historical, and intriguing story of one of the first battles in the South - the Battle of Kings Mountain. The novel provides readers with fictitious characters portraying colonists of that time. Major Patrick Ferguson, however, was a real commander of the British army. Paul Dunn goes into detail of Ferguson's life and one of his most famous sayings: "I am on Kings Mountain, I am king of this mountain and not even God Almighty and all the Rebels from hell can drive me from it." This novel provides readers, young and old, with an interesting tale of American southern colonists fighting for their freedom. The book could be used by teachers, parents, or librarians for a history lesson or intelligent read.

Being an avid reader of American history and American historical fiction, I found this book to be outstanding. Reading about an historical event and historical people in the way of a fictitious story helps readers understand and grasp the events more easily than just listing facts on a piece of paper. I really enjoyed this book.
