Author honored to address a meeting of the Dayton Fraternal Order of Police
Considerable pressure was placed upon the Dayton Police Department during the string of Jack the Strangler Murders, between 1900-1909. Being the "Golden Age of 'Yellow' Journalism," newspapers and pundits blasted Dayton for its inability to solve these crimes. Outsiders claimed that it was so obviously the work of a "ripper." And, why was Dayton singled out, a medium sized, unobtrusive midwestern town. Pressure mounted until the Sheriff, prosecutor and coroner "sweated" a confession out of a black man, son of a slave. He was convicted but the Dayton Police knew he didn't commit the crime. The murders continued.
