Whoever said that empty nest syndrome was something we experience when our last teen leaves home....was wrong!
A short while ago I said goodbye to my young daughter.It was her first day of 'real' school and she seemed to have settled in well amongst her fellow classmates.Not bad, considering that I had only spent an hour with her.I thought I'd be 'needed' for atleast half a day.As it turned out I was given a few hints by my own child and realised that she was giving me my clearance,so to speak.
The whole family had been looking forward to this day.The day when both daughters could attend school together and see each other throughout the day.My younger child would no longer have to wait until 3;30 pm to see her big sister.For me though, I thought of all the things I'd be able to accomplish.I would have a whole day to do all the things that I'd put off for a while,for 5 days a week! Heaven!
So back to that first day.As I strolled back down the school driveway I was filled with this deep sense of 'aimlessness' .It was unmistakable.It was a beautiful day,my child had reached a milestone in her short life and I felt like I was about to bawl my eyes out.I finally reached a very quiet home and realised that my nest was indeed empty.The silence was deafening.
Well,I had a glimpse of the future that day and I realised empty nest syndrome even happens to parents who see their last child off to 'big' school. So parents be warned!!
