Richest 1% soon to own more than everyone else combined
I am racing to post this before the President’s State of the Union message. There are a few hints that he will focus on inequality as a major concern to him, to us, and to the world community. That he might address this issue is a partial victory for those of us who have been waving it painfully for him and others to see for many years now. But I doubt he will point out the dire consequences of this issue if it is left alone for time and circumstances to resolve. Here is the possible outcome (not a prediction, just a warning) if this issue is not resolved soon:
The world is fast approaching another milestone in the evolution of this social disease known as inequality. By 2016 the richest one percent will own more than all others in the world combined (Oxfam projection). Digest that projection for a moment. If it does not bother you, then this one probably will not bother you either: In the next 30 years the richest one percent will almost certainly own everything, and the rest of us will own nothing of value at all. That means you will not have a home, or a savings account, or a 401(k), or stocks or bonds, or anything of value except for your clothes and a few pieces of furniture. And you will probably be living in a hole in the ground because there will be a global war—yes, real class warfare will be raging—in every locale around the globe. It will be swift, bloody, and devastating. And to the victors will go the spoils. Yes, the 99 percent will level the playing field—on their terms.
How long the battle will rage depends on who the military forces of the world choose to defend and fight for—the one percent, or the 99 percent. And since the military are clearly part of the 99 percent in every country, it’s a pretty sure bet they will not be taking orders from Middle East sheiks, or from kings, queens, oil tycoons, Mitt Romney, or the Koch brothers.
So, even if you are a dyed-in-the-wool hard right-winger, with your own arsenal of firearms, and with National Rifle Association banners plastered on and used tanks parked under every tree in your view, you are in for the quickest and surest butt-kicking of your life. You will not have a snowball’s chance in hell.
The proximate cause of the uprising will be the same as the goals sought and realized by the Koch brothers and all their cohorts. The 1% will have brought on their own downfall. The will learn that the richest are not the brightest, they are not the strongest, and they are not the most courageous. Their castles will fall, and they will be buried in their own debris. The underlying cause will be as old as the first humans who first stood upon the earth and chose to take much more than their fair share of the bounty that lay before their eyes: They will be done in by their own greed.
