Sweetwater wrote two hard-hitting short stories many years ago to address domestic abuse through nature's settings, those stories being Feminist Ivory: Carving New Life and Raising the Reindeer Pole, which addresses the Salmon canneries, and the Storyknife, a heartfelt story of survival in the Arctic. These storylines also addressed in Sweetwater's book and film, The Buckskin Skirt Oar Traveler, the salmon being spotlighted to bring to light an environmental storyline. Sweetwater's story, The Rudder of Nome also addresses the plight of the salmon in a tie-in to the story with the disease of diabetes, that storyline also addressed in The Buckskin Skirt Oar Traveler Book and Film adapted by Sweetwater.
