This poem is a summary based on the play Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe.
O Doctor Faustus, so clever was he;
He traded his life for immortality.
Led by lust and greed alone,
To receive the power that he now owns.
But never forget, it came at a price;
The Devil holds his soul just like a vice.
By using his blood he writes the deed,
That very promise that Lucifer needs.
And with this magic his spirits shall rise,
And the Devils will dance to conceal their lies.
For Faustus' soul is surely doomed,
Devoured, by the Devil's fumes.
The Seven Sins; a game they will play,
So on the right path shall Faustus stay.
Doomed forever, he cannot repent!
Forced to outlive the life he had spent.
"Sweet Helen, make me immortal with a kiss",
His fate now sealed by a voluptuous kiss…
"The clock will strike, the devil will come",
For Faustus' soul shall then succumb.
Poor Doctor Faustus for his life did end,
Dragged to hell, to endure torment.
Anguish and torture; his soul forever cursed,
For Faustus' body shall now rest on Earth.
Hello Stephie,
How nice to see you posting!
Such a fascinating poem, mirroring the myth and theme of the novel Docktor Faustus. Being limited in space and time, I assume the play must be of necessity an abridged version of the full story, and yet you've captured the essence of the story in just 24 lines. Good work, Stephie.
This now being late Spring, 2012, I look forward to reading more of your postings. Maybe yes?
A further collection of poems, many from years in the Middle East, but also the California San Francisco and Central Coast areas (Santa Cruz, Carmel, Big Sur, Berkeley, etc.).
