I Am An American

I am an American.
Within my veins flow the blood of ancestors
from diverse and rich cultures,
ancestors of varied lands, languages and skin tones.
All had hopes and dreams for themselves
and their children.

I stand with head held high,
desirous of happiness for myself and others.
I dream of a great destiny for all people.
with great expectation and firm conviction,
I applaud mankind's awesome future.

I am not perfect. There are no perfect human beings.
Mankind has not reached its full potential,
nor are we close in achieving this goal,
yet, ingrained deep within my being,
I possess strong love of life, freedom and country.

I embrace the artist's tools of music, paint and pen.
I applaud the compassionate as well as the courageous.
This earth and its inhabitants, I respect.
I visualize humanity as a bouquet of splendor,
yet to be.

I am an American,
a member of the human race, akin to all, far and near.
I learn from past mistakes, mine, as well as other's.

Daily, I struggle and fight to survive, to evolve,
to do the best and most that I can to protect
and enrich this life experience.
Such is my quest!

I am an American ... and proud to be!

I don't know how I missed this, Gwen, but it is excellent! Patriotism at its best, separate from the political process and flowing from the heart of someone who knows what pride and freedom are. I salute you, poet! Dawn

We all struggle daily and fight to survive but I think that is what makes america what it is that even in our daily fight we never give up the quest of a better life or world. Also loved the fact if we trace back we did come from some many different blood lines.
Nice write

I really like this...and can relate to it on a number of levels...it sounds like myself, you come from a Heinz57 background...I often kid a bit on the subject, telling folks that my blood line is so mixed, I am practically a walking UN.
Well done work here, Gwen.
