She awoke me gently, smiling at me
She'd brought me hot, peppermint tea
And wanted to know what else
She could do for me
Needless to say
She'd already planned our day
So I arose and showered and dressed
While she informed me about breakfast
Breakfast, she said with a tilt of her head
Would be a Burrito ... Grande'
With peppers, meat, cheese and eggs
Enjoyed at her favorite cafe. Then off we'd go
To explore Santa Fe ... some more
There was much for us to do and see
The Loretto Chapel
The Tea House
The Ice Creamery
And of course, Okeeffe's museum
Oh, yes, she'd promised so and so
She'd bring me to meet them
Ah, her new boyfriend!
Oh yes, I must meet him
More places to go, more friends to meet
Oh dear, the heat and my poor aching feet!
Yet, I grinned and I was as cool as could be
I think she'd forgotten, that I'm no 'chickadee'
Yet, excitement totally consumed my day
Thankfully, it kept weariness at bay
She asked:
How about a frosty margarita
Or perhaps a fajita and a glass of sangria?
How about a salad and a steak for dinner?
Would a great dessert be a winner?
We sat on a patio under the stars
Enjoying the sound of musician's guitars
Sipping lemon-grass, infused iced tea
We laughed and reminiesced about family
She talked excitedly about her life
We talked about passion, about world strife
Suddenly, she paused, then added tenderly
"Mom, I'm so glad you came to visit me
I wish you had much more time to stay
Yet I'm thrilled that you're here, anyway."
"I love you darling," I said all aglow
"I've had more fun than you'll ever know
And I'll be back to visit again, someday
With you and delightful Santa Fe"
Santa Fe is a beautiful place, to live and to visit, Gwen, and your poem is a beautiful tribute to the city and your daughter. I live about an hour from Sante Fe in Albuquerque. Everytime I have visitors, Santa Fe is on the touring agenda. The plaza is wonderful and if you ever get the chance to stay at the Hotel Santa Fe, it is a treat (and an expensive one at that) that you will never forget. It is owned and operated by the Santa Fe Nation and is the nicest hotel in all of New Mexico. Santa Fe is a wonderful place to explore and share with your daughter. I hope you get to visit my "Land of Enchantment" again, soon. I have a poem called Coming Home that I wrote about New Mexico if you care to read it. Also one called Desert Dawn. I think either might spark memories of your time spent in New Mexico. I am a transplant, only been here about 6 years, love it though and consider it my home.
