SOMEONE ELSE’S WIFEby Dale Hudgins Copyright 2000-2003All rights reserved. No part of this poem may be reproduced in any form without written consent of the author.I was just seventeen, that first time,So young, so scared, but, wanting what was soon, to be,We shared that backseat love,In amazement, you wondered aloud,What have I here,Spent many nights together, since that time,I asked you to be my wife,Soon it was my turn, for the Vietnam days,Had a dream you cheated, sat straight up in bed, from that smoke filled haze,Had to wait, till I was shipped home, asked you if it was true ,With a nod and yes, sadly, then, just shook my head,Wanted to, almost did, walk away,I knew then, like I know now,You were destined to be,Someone else’s wife,But decided that my life, without you, so empty would be,Dusted off, what was left of my pride,Got back down, on that one knee,Asked you again, if still, my wife, you would be,Twelve months, went by, and our union yielded,Our only child,The not so happy times, soon, were upon us,Disharmony, arguments, the menu for the day,Just six short months later, the courtroom’s gavel,Like a bullet to my senses, marriage ended,Soon, you again, would accept and agree,That you are,Someone else’s wife.
