The first time you see your prison
There's a moment of liberation
The walls seem small, the place petty
The door just ajar
It takes more to leave it than that
A reminder of the cinder in the eye
That set you wondering on it
In the first place
Assuming you escape, as some do
You may, or will, be drawn back again
To pull the door behind you
However much it bangs with the wind
There is no leaving your prison
Forever. It belongs to you
A gift of your illumination
Once you cross the line
From who you want to be to who you discover you are
Trees sway violently in a summer storm
And once fallen
The space that’s left
Is now free of its beautiful obscurity
Gives no evidence anyone was there
After you’ve
Discovered you love life
Or your wife, more than justice
Found the biological constraints of your compassion
Can you ever go back to teaching piano lessons?
Trees sway in a summer sky
There is no returning to your prison
Forever. It has been stolen from you
The price of your rumination
I would assume that escaping teaching piano lessons would be like me escaping writing. I may just do that one day, but it will be with great regret that I will be no longer able where I once ran so free.
Some self-made prisons are hard to break through,
but once the walls come down and the door is kicked open,
freedom is a horse running wildly through green meadows,
it cannot be restrained,
nor can the walls and the door be mended.
