Sadly this is a poem about my daughter's battle with crystal meth. I miss the happy girl she was before she began this dark struggle.
Caught between the narrows bordering light and dark she fights the demon of temptation, holding her shield of motherhood, emblazoned with her son’s photograph, a reminder of the purpose of the battle.
Yet the darkness nearly overwhelms as the tentacles of addiction reach into her body, obscuring her heart with their spiny points of need. Their constant clamoring obliterates his calls for attention and protection.
The Knight of the Devil Dust, carrying his white cross, does not easily surrender. He rolls across her soul with swiftness and vengeance, promising euphoria but delivering only a wasting, half-life.
Fallacious friends seek her in need of sharing their dismal existence, unable to face their own failures and shortcomings. Blinded to the poverty of their souls, she is caught in their deceit, searching for the false safety of their promises.
The seed of her true self awaits in the darkness, secretly reaching through the narrows, hoping for the touch of light. Her son’s cries of “Mommy” secure sustenance for the seed’s struggling existence. Her family’s prayers offer hope.
The war may never end – The outcome rests within her hands.
I do not have any personal experience with this but, as an educator in a high school, I know that of which you write. I posted a poem here called, "Devil's Bride" which is specifically about the same topic. I pray that your daughter will be freed of this bondage. Thank you for sharing this poignant write, Leysa. Love, peace, and strength to you. Regis
My thoughts are with you and your daughter. I know your pain
and your daughter's as well. Godspeed to all of the prayers that are being sent to both of you.
It is cruel to parents and the child.
I know a bit about that stuff having
raised three kids and watching them
struggle with peer pressure but now
they're all clean. So there is hope.
Oh Leysa, how cruel life can be sometimes to mothers and children. I can't begin to understand or say I know your pain but my heart goes out to you and your grandchildren. Drugs are such a tradgedy and a scar on all of us in todays society.
