A tentative step, breath held, released,
chaotic swirling thoughts behind a brow, creased.
Fragile heart, bound by fragments of pride,
eyes ahead avoid the empty space at my side.
Prayers fall from lips tightly pursed;
each movement planned, rehearsed.
Fear and pain, my steady companions, await,
as I stand at this crossroads, hesitate.
Afraid to let go, afraid to hold on,
the life I planned, dead, gone.
My ninth hour is reached; I am forsaken.
I ask for this burden to be lifted, taken.
Anger, frustration fight against acceptance,
while reality’s light offers clairvoyance.
The clouded vision clears at last;
my grip releases its hold on the past.
Love unchained, the key, opens the door
and pushes inevitable change to the fore.
This too shall pass, firmly resolved;
past sins and hurt will be absolved.
Hope, infant-like, cries out to be heard,
promise of relief takes flight like a bird.
Deep within I find my mainstay,
my heart and soul’s own cachet.
Anticipation replaces fear;
I shout out loud for all to hear:
I am my life’s designated driver --
I am a survivor.
I am my life’s designated driver
I am a survivor.
