The intelligent Lepidoptera of Alpha Centauri

Could not ignore the Christian story

“Maybe Christ was a chrysalis and, just like us

You’re all supposed to be butterflies. Why all the fuss?”

A priest who told them how Jesus saves

Was the first of his kind to go to his grave

Nailed to a tree, he did not survive

And, though they all waited, he did not revive

His grub-like body remained earth-bound

No butterfly rose from the blood-soaked ground

No moth-like wings and no angel appeared

They waited three days by the corpse revered

“Maybe” they said “ we got it all wrong.

Perhaps plus the prayers you people need song"

So they gathered their folk from all over their world

Even the young, with their wings just unfurled

They sat and they sung as they nailed up the next

In fact they nailed up three, as they kept to the text.

"So much better for you, once you can fly"

Said the leader of moths "You won't really die."

The rest of the team fled back to their ship

But the moths got there first, they were ever so quick

They spread their wings over the entire pod

"Please do not go. We know you're our God"

The translating computers tried very hard

But the space trip was flawed and the journey ill-starred

The spacemen replied "We know you are liable

To misunderstand that Gideon Bible.

We don't all believe in that particular creed

We are an earth-bound  race of the human seed

We are leaving you now and I doubt we’ll return”

And off went the ship with a mighty big burn

But some Lepidoptera stowed away

And that ship will come back here some fateful day…..
