Observing the activity around a bird feeder in my backyard one morning after it had snowed led to this short poem. The stark contrast of the red cardinals sitting in the pure white snow was quite beautiful.
Wedding veil snow
draped against tree trunks
delicately undulating hills of
stark whiteness until
the cardinals come…
resting atop the snow
like blood drops from heaven.
