In the weeks following 9/11 my then literary agent suggested to her clients that we all express our feelings; her idea was to put our thoughts into a format for publication - that never happened, but I remembered today that I'd saved my contribution....and this is what I said then - and what I would STILL say now if asked.
With open arms we’ve welcomed all who have sought freedom, true justice, a respect for human rights, and a reward for a hard day’s work. In time our country became a world leader, known for its’ fairness and its’ willingness to help others who sought “like” ideals. The gates have been open for centuries with few questions asked and shelter given to all. After the tragedy of September 11th, 2001, inflicted upon six thousand innocent human beings by those who have no right to pass a death sentence on anyone in this country, we are realizing it is time to become more vigilant in guarding our gates. The tragedy changed things forever in our minds, hearts, souls, and in our view of the world around us. We all experienced the horrible sadness and loss as so many lives were ended, but we have also experienced an uplifting spirit of patriotism and a re-birth of the American spirit – the spirit that brought us all together in the first place. We have learned who our true world friends are as we pull together to fight and win the battle to end terrorism. Those who lost their lives can know that their passing has pulled us closer together and given us renewed strength to cleanse the world forever of those who would seek to end it.
Excellent piece of writing Pam. The fight against terrorism and terrorists is one that MUST be fought until WON. Now it has started it must not be a half-hearted attempt that collapses, as it did in the first Iraqi war. The so called Peace-niks make me sick, they would sit back and let terrorism continue, until it affects them directly, then they would be screaming blue murder, why didn't you protect ME. The USA and the UK in particular need to tighten up their borders and their security, both have been too easy going in admitting suspect people to our respective countries and allowing them to train in destructive or suspect practises. This is a magnificent, truthful piece that I felt fortunate to read. This tells things the way they are, not the way the, oh, the spinners, I guess you would say I see on TV daily saying ALL THE WRONG THINGS. This is masterful and with an upbeat feeling, if that is possiblbe after all that has happened. America is in for the fight for her life and I pray to God that we have the fortitude to maintain the fight until victory is assured.
