My version of the big chill.

I sit in chilled stillness,
A frosty mug.
In this brooding Arctic thaw.
I try,
Desperately,
To force my eyes to smile
Aurora Borealis,
Offer a sign of goodwill.

Despite best efforts
I am unable to overcome
Your
Frozen tundra frown.
Conversational glaciers
Crackle.
The breaking up,
Absent of any true emotion.

However,
Briefly,
I am distracted by the
Sparkle of sun diamonds,
The steady drip, drip, drip,
As tears from ice-dagger tips
Plummet to the floor.

A tiny pool appears
Quicksilver.
The reflection in your eyes,
A toxic memory,
Quickly re-freezes;
Becomes a tarnished pewter.

All lies and indiscretions
Now lie,
Here,
Beneath the soles
Of my frostbitten feet.

I curse the winter,
The tease of Spring!
You chastise the numbness
Of my negativity.

I tell you that I am
Clinging to the notion that this iceberg
Is a life raft
And that I shall remain afloat!

We both laugh - uneasily.

And just as I begin to feel
The pinpricks
Of some
Small
Resolution,

I cannot help but shiver.

You have put on your overcoat.
A blast of frigid air lingers…
The freezer door
Slams shut.

Images burst forth, fortunately the non-traditional type that have become mulch in my reading of far too many over sentimental BS ruminations of divorce. As my muse and partner said recently: marriage remains the most common cause of divorce, and to that end (after creating 3 of the little Frankenstein monster-events myself) suffice it to say, your words here would be well served as a marriage ceremony, preceding -- "I do" Loved the reality of marriage's macabre nature you infused into this marvelous piece of wordsmithing.

What a wonderful bunch of analogies for being frozen out of a relationship. Kudos for great writing!

Visions of A Skylark Dressed in Black by Aberjhani
