Clocks can’t talk,
One told me so one day.
I asked it for the time
And, “stop’ was all it said.

“Stop, you say, I cannot stop
Or I will surely die.”
To this I waited patiently
But never got reply.

Now inner springs and ticking things
When wound up, oh so tight,
To only say my time was up,
Well, that was not all right!

And if I paused for just a sec
That watch would note me late,
Accosting me with waving hands,
Just to aggravate.

“Time,” I pled in much despair,
But all my time was gone.
I should have known that in the end,
Time goes marching on!
