I watch you
Chatting with some people I know,
As of yet, we haven’t met.
A spark of interest ignites within me.
I say to myself – not too close!
Your eyes meet mine
And before I know it
I hear you say hello,
Your smile is warm and inviting.
I say to myself – not too close!
Over several conversations
We explore those neutral grounds,
Music, the arts, nothing personal.
Keeping it simple is best for now, I know.
I say to myself – not too close!
A premeditated
Destination, dining in elegance,
Quiet table, drink in hand.
You look so beautiful tonight, so beautiful.
I say to myself – not too close!

Hinting only of a hidden loneliness
Somewhere deep down and on the inside.
I say to myself – not too close!
Time and fate
Conspire as we stand now at your doorway.
I find myself kissing you.
Your lips are sweet beyond goodnight.
Good night!
I say to myself – not too close!
