Is there a lesson in living “scared”?
Is there any way to stave off the terror?
Some words of wisdom to be passed along?
Some means to right this frightful wrong?
What will we need to carry on,
When fear appears at break of dawn?
Abusive parents, evil plots,
Threats of war, atomic bombs,
Accidents, illnesses,
Earthquakes and storms,
Terrorists, muggers, dark city streets,
Death and trysts with desperate love,
Loneliness, perhaps the fear of failure,
Abandonment, or loss of job…
So many things can come undone.
Much to unnerve, make us cower and run.
From any direction, land, sea, or air,
Even our subconscious can give us a scare.
Life is a journey through which we must learn
To care for ourselves and for those of concern.
We may turn to God, forsaking evil and sin
Strive for perfection, seek peace from within.
Yet, regardless of all of the choices we make,
Fear lingers in bigotry, jealousy, and hate!
It’s not in our grasp, it’s not in our hands!
What horrible deeds to be dreamed of by man!
A lifetime, we’re given, to find inner strength.
What courage possessed to face anything and everything?
Oh, to walk in the sunshine wherever we go,
To shake turmoil and mayhem from long rattled bones!
Thus far, in this flesh, I have barely survived,
I have learned when to hit and know where to hide.
But more than once, with fear close at hand,
A battle won, was lost again.
What safe of steel to hold this heart?
What armament to shield the mind?
There seems no easy way to guard
When fear sneaks up and whacks you from behind!
But in spite of it all, we plan for a better day, and we trudge onward while trying to make sense of who we are, why we are here, and what it all means. In rare moments when our spirits are unexpectedly high, we seem to understand that somewhere down the road there awaits a better day, a more enlightened day, when we will be able to see farther and with greater clarity. Maybe not.
For a musician and poet, you write like a great psychiatrist! All those here that write poetry of fear should take heed your wisdom… at least give it their ear. “What, me worry?”
Dear Michael,
Your poetic poem is very sensational and filled with somber emotion
F-E-A-R - is False Evidence Appearing Real
The opposite of fear is FAITH
I believe!
In my life I have seen many miracles.
I believe!
The fact that I am still alive today is a miracle.
I believe!
Praise God - for He is the creator of miracles and life itself. Amen...
Still Living on my Feet is the follow up to Tichaona Chinyelu’s first book, In the Whirlwind, which was rooted in a sense of hard-hitting revolutionary black love. However, in this sophomore effort, Tichaona brings the revolutionary essence from deep
