And 10x more single cells if you count the bacterial hitchhikers.
100 trillion cells
Somehow bound together
And every day we must tend to
Each and every one.
100 trillion cells
Clinging to each other,
Growing like a fungus,
Need their food and water,
Demanding our attention,
Or crumbling into dust.
100 trillion cells
And yet we look so seldom,
Unless there is a blemish here,
Unless there is a bulging there,
More focused on the outside,
The part we think is us.
100 trillion cells,
Chemical equations
Exposed to viruses and toxins.
Need vitamins and minerals,
All the right ingredients
To keep their balance so.
100 trillion cells
Born and born and born again.
A miracle of nature
Seeking out the nurturing,
Essential intercession,
Now watch the species grow.
100 trillion cells,
Everywhere distractions,
Mission misdirected,
Wonder how we got this far
Sustaining every single cell
On the quality of life we live
In a world we can’t afford.
100 trillion cells,
We are hoping for a miracle,
A spiritual rejuvenation,
Something that would let us know
That we are not alone.
100 trillion cells,
A soul to hold together.
The essence of creation,
The breath of life within us,
A cellular transformation
And on the body goes.
An interesting perspective that most don't think about. Some of the questions you raised have led me to believe that when we stopped being hunters and gatherers our genetic development became arrested and we no longer grew intelligently and physically by natural selection of the fittest.
As much as our science and technology tries to make us better and live longer, our deteriorating genetic makeup makes each generation more vulnerable than the last. That's why we are hearing so much about autism, diabetes, and asthma in our children today, along with a growing list of causes for cancer. Modern medicine is a two edged sword, allowing the unfit to live to reproduce and thereby weaken the gene pool more and more.
