Hinging childish hopes on things unseen,
Praying that faith will save the day,
Resting our heads upon our silky sheets,
Waiting for the fat man who travels by sleigh.
Everyone, we think, dreams a jolly tomorrow,
Pushing reality further and further away.
Yet, there are billions surrounded by suffering and sorrow,
And they are all but deaf to those who would say,
“Raise up your glass to a brighter future!
Give us a cheer for the good things to come!”
We who are blessed with our food and our shelter
Need not picture a picture of such utter oppression.
As we laugh and play we forget the forgotten,
The children in Cambodia, the homeless, the insane,
All the not-so pretty people never seen on TV,
This, our dirty little secret, this, our holiday shame.
And yet,
Such will be the legacy of our not-so-distant future,
These will be the hordes that come looking for more.
And as they trample our vineyards, murder our sons and our daughters,
They will surely marvel at what we had never shared before.
And they won’t be looking for paper-wrapped presents,
Hot wassail, eggnog, or sweet candy canes.
They won’t be singing Christmas jingles
And they won’t have faith in much of anything.
History has shown us that each generation is better off. Your thoughts, along with many others have also been repeated throughout history. I recently read an article stating 12 reasons that 2013 was the best year ever.
With the Internet and access to inexpensive smart telephones, there is a quiet revolution going on. The haves are learning about the have-nots and the have-nots are learning ways to overcome their dire situations. This transformation is happening in the face of global warming. By the end of this century, people will look back at a time that is as far different as the year 2000 was to the year 1900 at the beginning of this century.
Cheers. Let's lift our glasses high and toast a bright future.
Like me, you have a realistic view of life and especially those who have to, quite often, suffer needlessly for lack of our species compassionate nature to climb up out of the sludge we've buried ourselves in with hubris, solipsism and narcissism. If only... if only. Excellent wordsmithing on a take far too often rendered sappy and embarrassing. Well done. BTW, might want to check this sentence again: And as they trample our vineyards, murder our sons our and daughters,
If you tend to believe romantic, passionate, masculine poetry is a thing of past eras, read "She Intrigues Me," and be swept away in the beautiful craft of a contemporary poet of love.
