So who among us wants to be the hero?
Who among us wants to save the day?
Who among us wants to lead the charge?
To fight the fight that brings the change?
We all stand here at the ready!
Waiting for the clear command!
Hail the voice that will compel us!
Take us to the Promised Land!
Yes, we’ll listen for the signal,
Hoping some one leads the way.
But no one here is in a hurry,
When loss is a possibility.
We’ll spend good money funding courage,
We’ll buy your rifles - pay your dues…
Although those who risk a tidy pension
May not invest as much as we do.
OK, so we stay home and sign petitions,
Put the revolution in someone else’s hands.
Tell the poor we’ve got a job for them.
Say, we’re too busy. They’ll understand.
But we would be the best supporters,
Cheer them on as they take the lead.
We would sing their praise forever,
If they would give us what we think we need!
Otherwise we’re here to grumble,
Here to mumble discontent.
And no one seems to wonder why
Nothing ever changes.
We have become British, muddling through. It is much easier to send a buck or two or sign a petition that than to get off our asses and do something. If Ed Phillips is right, and I hope he isn't, there will come a time when everyone who is disenfranchised will rise up in a bloody revolution. Mob rule works when everything else fails.
On the other hand, if my great-grandfather had not chosen to be a blacksmith and had led the charge during the Civil War, I probably wouldn't be here. There is something to be said for staying out of the battle if you want your lineage to continue.
odin said all i'm thinking about this awesome write in his very last sentence, (maybe because it was the only sentence i could fully comprehend...love his overflowing vocabulary)
Back in the 50s and 60s, socialogist/writers like Fromm, Whyte, Packard, and Friedan analyzed the direction our conformist society was heading, suggested it would not work using the populist principals of the day as the holy grail, and suggested self-realization versus self-alienating conformity was a doomsday conundrum of a cocktail. Strange, as your poem infers, we haven't figured out the difference between what we want and what we need--and again as you say, "nothing ever changes" as collectivist conformity continues to take hostage any and all free thinkers...or at least tries. Feels good at times to be such a cave dweller, understanding food, clothing and freedom of mind is all one really needs.
