Francis was a child of Italy
when he went off to war
born into a wealthy family
knew not what God was for

but captured he was made a prisoner
his journey then began
step by step the truth it came to him
he became another man

asking Jesus for enlightenment
the light came to his eyes
all his friends were full of puzzlement
when he abandoned his past life

he lived a beggar round Assisi town
renounced the ways of sin
rebuilding churches that had fallen down
and disciples came to him

he walked the mountains preaching to the poor
barefoot sunrise and sunset
to follow all the teachings of the Lord
and walk in Christ's footsteps

and to all people through eternity
he represented hope
becoming famous for his purity
with the blessing of the Pope

he tamed the wolf and brother of the sun
he preached to all the birds
he gave away all glory he had won
to spread the Gospel word

and when stigmata was upon his hands
and feet he did not cry
he came to us so we could understand
the how and when and why

St. Francis was his name and when he died
he left a promise clear
that when you're empty and lost inside
