then Saint Francis spread his arms
and preached unto the birds
and they settled round his feet
to listen to the words

and they sat upon his shoulders
and they hovered round his face
to hear his gentle voice
so sweet and full of grace

and some people laughed and turned away
some watched him filled with awe
to see a man, a mortal man
who was at one with God

he said my brother sister birds
you should praise your Creator
and always love Him for He gives

He made you noble, made your home
