SAINT FRANCIS AND THE FIRST NATIVITY SCENE song lyrics

Francis saw his native country
full of greed and love of things
and he pondered weak and weary
how to make the people sing

and it came to him a vision
of solemn festivity
to build a scene of living worship
of the first Nativity

he wrote a note to friend Giovanni
to recall the memory
of the child born the first Christmas
to let all the people see

He who came was born as they were
born in poverty like them
when he came he was their Savior
lion lay down with the lamb

so he wrote Pope Honorius
for permission of the deed
to enlighten all the world
with the planting of a seed

In the town of Grecchio
he made a manger brought the hay
got an ox and ass and actors
the town came at the end of day

and with joy and with wonder
saw the scene as if in flesh

Francis was a light of God
