in 1219, the Fifth Crusade
to Egypt did Saint Francis go
to try to turn Malik al Kamil
to the Christian road

Jerusalem was just a dream
that some Crusaders had
they marched in glory for the Lord
but everything went bad

Saint Francis only preached of love
he knew what it was for
he thought the Sultan was a fool
who only wanted war

but al Kamil was wiser still
and knew the horrid truth
that battle was without a doubt
to sacrifice the youth

there is no God but Allah
did the Sultan say
but Francis' only answer
was to the Lord to pray

Malik he would not give up God
and neither would the Saint
the just solution to be found
was only with restraint

negotiate a stalemate
where all people could be just
and live together harmony
not buried in the dust
