Saint Francis suffered much
from his stigmata and his fasting
to purify his soul and body
for the glory everlasting

and weak and oh so weary
returning to Assisi
the country of his birth
returning to the earth

back to the city of his youth
where he had opened many doors
saying I have done my part
may Christ teach you to do yours

and on the day before he died
he broke bread with his friends
and lay down naked on the ground
to meet his worldly end

they read John's Gospel unto him
and when they reached the part
the words said Bring My soul from prison
at last there stopped his heart

his eyes were closed his voice was still
he'd taken his last breath
his soul was led away to heaven
by his good Sister Death

and though Saint Francis went to God
these many years has gone
his deeds will be immortal
and his words live on
