just back from a mini-retreat on the farm -- this poem chronicles a ppost afternoon nap walk |

a whinny alerts the paddock
to my approach
six pairs of equine eyes focus on me
threes buckskin ponies
and a black one;
a spotted ass and
a mare.
as I walk alog the fence
they watch me warily;
do I portend
work or a feeding
or does some dark
episode of abuse
lurk in their past?
sanctuary they have here
but the instinct of the herd is strong.
taking no chances
six pairs of eyes watch me
warily as I retire
six buckskin ponies
and a black one,
a spotted ass
and a mare
