autumn
blew into town, yesterday
on the wing of a south west gale
leaves and shingles and branches
flying before its approach
the leaves of the red maple by the curb
took fright,
turned yellow
and fled.
the season is so late
that it had to make a big show of arriving
before winter steals its thunder.
the seasons flow so smoothly
it seems to us mortals,
but there must be
some seasonal rivalry.
perhaps summer envies winter’s long cool nights.
or
maybe spring covets the colours of autumn,
or
the competition might be
who arrives with the most flare—?
