Waskaganish -- literally "little house"; southern-most community on the Quebec coast of James Bay --Waskaganish is a first nations community (Cree)
Norseman, Beaver, Otter single engined high-winged monoplanes -- designed for use in the Canadian bush.
Dakota = DC-3 Canso aka Catalina, PBY.
The Otter is huge 58'wing span, 41' long...enough background:

Poem Artwork

The Otter taxis down wind
Half a mile up stream the pilot
Guns the engine as he turns the
the floats into the gale. The
First wave breaks over the nose
the second, and a third
But the big radial drags the plane
Off the river and into the sky

In front of the of the Bay
The checker players do not look up
From their eternal game. They
Remember other planes other flights—
Beavers, Cesnas, Cansos, Dakotas,
Black bodied Norseman
With red wings, “Flying coffins,”
Carrying TB cases to the Hospital
In Moose Factory; to Moose
seldom back.

The Otter has circled around flying
Over the town headed south.
The Checker players joke and tease,
Among themselves and their lookers on
The game goes on forever, inspite of
Coming and going, arrivals and departures,
Birth and death itself. The game goes on
