I walk through the door and am greeted,
By an uneven pitter-patter of paws.
Smiling brown eyes,
The tiniest wagging tail.
I must hurry to reward her,
For guarding the house.
Whilst I, a gad-about,
Have been leisurely grocery shopping.
She dashes to welcome her human sister,
Lopsided running, fast as a gazelle.
Dropping her book bag, Sister bends down,
To receive the many puppy kisses.
She is delighted to see her Daddy,
And gambols at his side.
As he cleans the pool and weeds the yard,
She is his companion and helper.
What made this person surrender her?
Was it her lack of a paw?
Was it her finicky appetite?
Was it her various ailments and advanced age?
Whatever the reason, I do not care,
I thank you, whoever you may be.
The love that she gives outweighs any trials,
We are blessed with our sweet Brandy Lyn.
