Your profile lies upon my sheets in the full embrace of sleep
You lean into a fullness stretch then curl up like a leaf
My eyes sweep over your sandlewood flesh
Your chiseled nose and brow
I draw a sketch of you in dreams
You're that little boy right now
In every flinch of your nerves
I see a pirate bold
In battle with the mighty sea
Right off some distant shore
You fight just like a musketeer
 With blades of steel... defiant
Then as you turn the morning sun
Morphs you again.... Prince Valiant
You're a royal  then, a King Arthur
Out dreaming a new quest
In a whispered ache you speak a name
Dulcinea was suspect
I heard another echo then
In a yearning voice you said
"Hold up you windmill of a chance"
Then Quixote fought instead
With kisses placed here and there
I calmed your dream back down
Just as your face contorted and you became a circus clown
It was a three ring circus then
With dancing girls and elephants
Fire-eating juggler and pigs that seem indignant
My tender man of dreamland
King Arthur and the boys
In the dreams of a Braveheart man
Where masters played with toys
I love this tiny child in you
So I tuck you safe in bed
Lean down to kiss your eyelids shut
And caress your man/child head.

....Goodnight Gene, Roy, Cisco....Oh Pancho...;-)

I've watched this process in my own son growing, from child to man and still the child lives, and perhaps that is all as it should be.
