My imagination has worked overtime during my journey through life and this only partially farcical portion of the trip is no exception.

I AIN’T DONE PAYING YET

Well, I’ve been down that road
and I’ve been up the creek.
I’m not over the hill,
but I’m getting close to the peak.

If you get what you pay for
and you pay for what you get,
oh Lord, I’ve been wondering
ain’t I done paying yet.

I’ve been used, abused,
beaten and bruised
and a couple a times
I’ve been falsely accused.

I’ve been called crazy and wild,
a fool and a clown.
For a time I was cheered
and once nearly drowned.

I’ve been rode hard and I’ve rode hard,
been driven and tried.
Been balled out and called out,
been beaten and I’ve cried.

I’ve been yelled at and spit on,
been made a fool
and more than once,
I’ve been taken to school.

I’ve been looked up to and down on
respected and feared.
Been cheated and lied to,
been accused and was cleared.

I’ve bombed and been busted,
broken and hog tied
and a time or two
it’s likely I’ve lied.

Been down in the oil fields,
dug coal in the mines,
spent time as a lumberjack
way out in the pines.

I’ve been to the end of my rope
and seen the end of the line.
I know rocks aren’t gold,
but seems that’s all my pan ever mines.

I’ve been stepped on and kicked round,
shit on and shot.
If you consider the possibilities,
I’m lucky that’s all I got.

I’ve climbed the walls
and I’ve had my back up agin’ it.
And, if money was water,
seen times I couldn’t spit.

I’ve seen mountains and valleys,
deserts and sand.
When it comes right down to it,
I’ve seen most of this land.

Been locked up and locked out,
but recently I’ve found,
there’s an end to this road
that I’ve been headed down.

Now I’ve nothing to do,
my remaining life to do it
and if my life has been a job,
it’s the first one I didn’t quit.

I’ve been mistreated and misguided
and while traveling around,
been cursed and was Born Again
ya might say lost and found.

Yeah, I’ve been down that road,
I’ve also been up the creek,
I’m not over the hill,
but I’m convinced I’ll make the peak.

I don't always get what I pay for,
but I always pay for what I get
and yes I'm still wandering,
so I ain’t done paying yet.

Still Living on my Feet by Tichaona Chinyelu

Still Living on my Feet is the follow up to Tichaona Chinyelu’s first book, In the Whirlwind, which was rooted in a sense of hard-hitting revolutionary black love. However, in this sophomore effort, Tichaona brings the revolutionary essence from deep
